Possibly concerned about the approach of Boer reinforcements under General Christiaan De Wet, Kitchener ordered a series of frontal attacks on Cronjes position (Maps). Battle of Paardeberg - The British Attack: Ill-conceived and uncoordinated, these assaults were beaten back with heavy casualties. When the days fighting ended, the British has suffered 320 dead and 942 wounded, making it the single costliest action of the war. In addition, to make the attack, Kitchener had effectively abandoned a kopje (small hill) to the southeast that was occupied by De Wets approaching men. While the Boers suffered lighter casualties in the fighting, their mobility had been further reduced by the death of much of their livestock and horses from British shelling. That night, Kitchener reported the days events to Roberts and indicated that he planned to resume attacks the next day. This roused the commander from his bed, and Kitchener was dispatched to oversee the repair of the railroad. In the morning, Roberts arrived on the scene and initially desired to recommence assaulting Cronjes position. This approach was resisted by his senior officers who were able to convince him to lay siege to the Boers. On the third day of the siege, Roberts began to contemplate withdrawing due to De Wets position to the southeast. Battle of Paardeberg - Victory: This blunder was prevented by De Wet losing his nerve and retreating, leaving Cronje to deal with the British alone. Over the next several days, the Boer lines were subjected to an increasingly heavy bombardment. When he learned that women and children were in the Boer camp, Roberts offered them safe passage through the lines, but this was refused by Cronje. As the shelling continued, nearly every animal in the Boer lines was killed and the Modder became filled with the dead carcasses of horses and oxen. On the night of February 26/27, elements of the Royal Canadian Regiment, with assistance from the Royal Engineers, were able to construct trenches on high ground approximately 65 yards from the Boer lines. The following morning, with the Canadian rifles overlooking his lines and his position hopeless, Cronje surrendered his command to Roberts. There are several different interests that exist in a company especially when individuals and groups within it make decisions. There are shareholder interests, employee interests, management interests and stakeholder interests that conflict with each other. The current issue highlights the conflicts that arise between the interests of the management and the shareholders as well as the different interests of the shareholders themselves. This is where the clash begins. On the one hand, those who approve of the new ruling maintain that their interests are being upheld especially because they are the ones who invested in the business. This forwards their main interest of the organization succeeding in the long term because of the investments they have put into the business. While the previous ruling handicaps small shareholders, this new rule gives them voice through the process of â€Å"proxy access† as long as they have at least 3% of the controlling stock. Community service lately has become a big consumption of my weekends, which have had multiple positive effects on me and only has it brought hope and happiness to people, but it also lead to spiritual and personal growth. It is an experience that cannot be bought with any amount of money. A volunteer benefits himself or herself because they get to see how their contribution has made a difference. This experience contributes to personal development especially in areas such as self-fulfillment, self-confidence, and self-esteem that often flourish in the midst of volunteering experiences. The contributions that I have made to my community, volunteering countless hours at the local two general hours during weekends and summers has really impacted me as a person. I now am more involved with my community then ever through a club that I have joined at school (California scholarship foundation) and have started the year off by volunteering with AID’s walk Los Angeles and many more to come over the year. I now don’t see volunteering as a sacrifice of my time rather an opportunity to become a better person through community outreach.

But not only has the headline given us this feeling, as it eems like a written report of the incident the way the poet has not involved himself in the poem, but conveys the idea of someone standing back watching the incident or someone that knows the young couple, besides that the present tense is used to give immediacy. The poem can be split into three parts, as there are three couples involved. The beginning of the poem shows us the young couple are passing by maybe looking at diamond engagement rings, when suddenly they are used as human bricks by two young attackers, and fall backwards into the shop window, suffering the start to bad pain and injuries. While the two attackers continue to go ahead and snatch what they can from this shop. : At the meantime the two drivers passing by, focusing on the road ahead trying to avoid the situation, and dont bother helping. This shows two corrupt figures, the drivers and the attackers. Firstly, the attackers can be classified as corrupt figures due to the way they have treated the young couple as it disgusts us: The two youths who have pushed them are about to complete the operation. This shows us that the attackers have used the couple as human bricks, and gives us the impression they are really ignorant and only think bout themselves. This is created by the word choice used by Edwin Morgan, `complete the operation, as it suggests in a way that the youth are looking forward to `loot what they can from the shop, and not caring about the fallen couple but completed the days work for them, which they may seem proud or heroes for doing it but overall we would look at them being corrupt. But on the other hand it gives us the image that it is he beginning to the couples surgical operation. The fact that the attackers continue on with their work and did not give another thought to what they did or see what they have caused f the couple being in a terrible state, and end up feeling guilty shows us their lack of concern for people: to loot what they can smartly Their faces show no expression. It shows how the attackers are heartless and do not feel any shame or shock to what they have done but the poet does contrast the attackers reaction to the couples reaction of `surprise, `shock and `pain which therefore really makes the attackers stand out and seem more violent and that they have no heart with feelings. Also the word `smartly at the end of the line shows us how they are concerned about o one else but to `complete the operation and gives us the image of the rate of speed they are moving about in. The attackers stand out and the poet conveys them to be corrupt as the pain the couples are in, shocks us, as we are reading the poem, and reveals sympathy: The young mans face is bristling with fragments of glass and the girls leg has caught on the broken window and spurts arterial blood over her wet-look white coat and the beginning of pain. In these lines the poet shows us how horrific the violent incident is, which creates the attackers to be very inconsiderate and they seem as f they dont belong to human nature. It also shows how the poet in these lines does not use any rhyme, rhythm and versification, but it is short statements to create the image of giving facts about the injuries that happened. The poet makes use of figurative language and word choice to get the image across vividly and makes it seem very shocking. The subject of the poem, has an effect on us and arouses sympathy as we do not generally think nothing of it, we take a reaction to it, of how it shocks and disgusts us. It arouses sympathy as we think of the two couples, the fact they young lovers and we think of the love etween them which makes it seem wonderful, and that they may be looking for an engagement ring, which is spoiled by the attackers: With a ragged diamond of shattered plate-glass This is ironic as it shows us how `the diamond of shattered plate-glass as it suggests they may be looking at diamond engagement rings until they got pushed out the way and it all `shattered. The poet uses onomatopoeia to give us an image of the smashing glass, and this all builds up and creates anger towards the attackers as we read the poem, as it gives us the feeling that there is no need for all this and why do such people do such hurtful acts. The poet has built the poem up step by step to show how corrupt these attackers are but then we realise there are people that could help: It is a sharp clear night in Sauchiehall Street. In the background two drivers Keep their eyes on the road. This makes us wonder as the drivers passing by must have heard or seen the incident, but decided not to get involved not ironically because they are following the Highway Code but to avoid getting involved. The poet also tells us that, `it is a sharp clear night, and it shows us a powerful irony that it is `sharp, meaning it may be cold and also he cut and hurt couple on the ground. But it suggests that the weather condition was not terribly bad that the drivers had to focus on the road ahead. The word `clear emphasises how it must have been easily seen but ignored. This then leads to who is the more corrupt figure the drivers or the attackers, the drivers were being very ignorant and we think to our selves why are they? But the incident was caused by the attackers. The poet makes use of irony throughout the poem which gives us a clearer image of the poem as it shows how fast the poem is going with the violence and the pictures are moving about in our mind. In conclusion the poet has created the attackers to be corrupt as they stand out and we do have a reaction towards them. But throughout the poem the poet shows us all kinds of techniques but at the very last line of the poem Edwin Morgan reveals the message across to us. It makes us wonder about the society we live in, where things happen and are ignored and gives us a brief insight to the violence in the inner city and such ignorance people have. The technology may be impressive, but convincing the relevant decision-makers to buy the product is easier said than done. As you know, healthcare is a fast-moving area and your innovation will be fighting for attention with the scores of new products, techniques and studies released every day. Your sales team will be promoting the benefits of the product in sales presentations and one-to-one meetings. You can pave the way by creating compelling marketing materials that will generate interest even excitement before those meetings take place. But simply making such material available wont guarantee that your message is heard. Most managers have a stack of reports, letters and e-mails to wade through on a daily basis. Reading a leaflet or letter on a new heart surgery technology may be the least of their priorities. Thats why your marketing materials need to be carefully crafted. They need to be written in language that prompts your reader to take action. A powerful, well-written document can make even the most harried managers sit up and take notice. It can convince them that they need your product. But it must address their needs, not yours. How can you write marketing materials that will really get your products noticed? Do the groundwork Whether youre writing a leaflet, a poster or web content, you need to prepare. Research your market fully before you start and make sure you understand all the challenges your prospects face. A nursing home will have different needs from an NHS hospital, for example. So avoid a one size fits all approach to your marketing. Keep your focus on the reader by asking yourself the following questions: What is the document about? Who will read it? How much do they already know about the subject? What do they absolutely need to know? How important is the subject to them? How interested are they in the subject? (Note that readers arent always interested in whats important to them. So you often need to make them interested.) Naomi Baron, a linguistics professor at the American University in Washington DC, calls this the search and seize approach. Assuming that your readers will treat all your documents like this will help you to create clear written work. So include lots of bullet points and subheadings and use important words that your readers will be looking for. Make your writing as simple as possible, but dont be afraid to use jargon if youre certain your readers will understand it. So remember to take as much care over your e-mails as you do with your other marketing materials. The first step is to create a descriptive subject line. Hot news Having news reports or features appear in newspapers and magazines is an excellent way to build credibility with the people you want to influence. Press releases are the standard format for sending journalists news. But with so many in circulation, it can be difficult to get yours noticed. Journalists are also starting to bite back against releases that are poorly written, irrelevant to their needs or little more than thinly-veiled sales pitches. How do you get your press release to the top of the pile? The secret is to give journalists exactly what they want: a news story. The headline is the most important part of your document. Press releases can be very effective if you tie the headline to a topical event. So you could write: Doctors will now be able to track patient progress 75% faster than before. Using figures in this way is very effective. But where possible, also include people in your document. So opt for One in four people will benefit rather than 25% will benefit. Finally, go back to your first sentence and ask yourself: So what? If you cant answer that, your message isnt compelling enough. Refine your document until youre convinced that its news that cannot be ignored. Think of writing marketing material as an investment. Dont be disheartened if a campaign doesnt immediately strike gold. Keep working on your writing style and aim to make it as punchy as possible.
